Negative self-talk is a well-known, little-talked about thing that many humans deal with by the minute.
Why? Cause we feel ugly.
Yeah, I said it. We feel ugly. We feel like the world might be a better place without our bodies slathered all over Instagram or any other form of social media. We feel like our words aren’t enough; like our thoughts and ideas are too much; like there is not enough room for us. Why? We feel ugly.
Or, if you prefer a nicer word, we feel ashamed. Ashamed of our hearts, our thoughts, our minds, our sins, skin, hair, shape, heritage, history, sexuality, fill in the blank.
But, we are not slaves to the lies of shame. We have been redeemed and are free to feel beautiful, significant and full of worth because of who we're loved by and who we're filled with--Jesus, our redeemer. To "redeem" means to make new. And if we're filled Jesus, our redeemer, who is everything that is beautiful, worthy, and significant, then shame is lying to us.
Most of us don’t want anyone to know how we feel, so we hide behind makeup, pretty words, clothing, songs, poetry, and even scripture. We beat bible into our pain to justify why we should feel ugly. We hide behind our activism, and other people’s feelings. We strive to prove that we’re not the lies we still believe and call it holiness. We self-degrade and call it humility.
And I’m calling it bull.
